Serve Wisconsin is a 22-member citizen body appointed by the Governor. Serve Wisconsin is attached to the Wisconsin Department of Administration and housed at the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services in the Division of Children and Family Services and is supported by a staff of six. Serve Wisconsin supports service in Wisconsin primarily by granting AmeriCorps funds through the Corporation for National and Community Service to organizations that involve citizens in service activities that meet human, educational, environmental, public safety, and homeland security needs. Through their participation in AmeriCorps programs, citizens are given the opportunity to not only enrich the lives of the people and communities they serve, but also their own lives through professional and personal development. For the 2006-2007 program year, Serve Wisconsin awarded over $4.5 million in AmeriCorps grant awards to 18 nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and universities in Wisconsin that were selected through a highly competitive state and national grant process. These grants will fund over 800 AmeriCorps members, who will provide over 943,000 hours of service to their communities. In addition, these AmeriCorps members will be eligible for more than $2.6 million in education awards, which can be used to pay for college or pay back qualified student loans. |
